Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_register_sidebar_widget() in …

I’ve just updated Wordpress engine to v2.5. I played with it for a moment and was very happy about it until I got this error when I went to Wordpress Dahsboard:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_register_sidebar_widget() in /XXX/wp-admin/includes/dashboard.php on line 31

Luckily, I’ve found a very simple solution on Tom Raftery’s Social Media Blog. Tom, thanks for sharing with others!

Change to Wordpress 2.5

I’ve just changed the engine for my blog from Wordpress 2.3 to Wordpress 2.5.

The change is not visible for the reader but there’s a lot going on in the dashboard, starting with the layout, dashboard widgets, multiple file upload, etc… To get the full list of the changes, please look at the official Wordpress blog.

High Performance Web Sites

Recently I’ve been reading “High Performance Web Sites” (look at amazon).

I think it’s a good book who can be recommended to all who do even little bit of front end development. The book describes 15 rules (regarding CSS, JavaScript, etc.) that should be followed in order to deliver high performance web sites. It’s rather short (c.a. 150 pages) and easy to read, but the suggestions described by the author can be helpful while you work.

Changes on my blog

A few days ago I made a few major changes on my blog:

The engine change went OK. Once I updated the files, there was a imprefections in querying database, but clicking the suggested link on wp-admin page solved them all.

Currently, when I have some free time I browse plugins and themes - still can find something better/new. So far, I’ve installed the following plugins and I’m happy with them (the descriptions used there come from the home pages of that plugins):

  • All in One SEO Pack - automatically optimizes your Wordpress blog for Search Engines (Search Engine Optimization).
  • Google Code Prettify - this plugin using google-code-prettify to highlight source code in your posts.
  • Google XML Sitemaps - this plugin will generate a sitemaps.org compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO.
  • Lightbox 2 - used to overlay images on the current page.
  • pb-techTags - enhances the_tags() by adding a link to Technorati to each tag.
  • SIOC Plugin - adds SIOC metadata export to WordPress blog.
  • Slashdigglicious - add user-submission icons and links at the bottom of each post: Digg, del.icio.us, etc.
  • Snap Shots Plugin - add Snap Shots to your website or blog. Snap Shots enhance links with visual previews of the destination site, including summaries of Wikipedia and IMDb, YouTube videos, stock charts, RSS feeds and more with just a single line of javascript.
  • SpamBam - a plugin that hopefully eliminates comment spam.
  • wp-cache - very fast cache module. It’s composed of several modules, this plugin can configure and manage the whole system.

If you can recommend other plugins, don’t hesitate to do that - just describe them in a comment to that post. Cheers!

Gmail as POP3 client

I’ve been using Google for ages, it was mostly the Google Search though… I’ve been using external software for mail management, having unorganized RSS, e.g. Untill August…

Then I started working for Kainos. The Systems folks announced it was impossible to use external software for private mail - security, viruses, POP3 blocked, bla bla blah… I thought, could be better… Still, I could manage my private mail using Webmail software - along with my server I got the SquirreMail web mail panel. This tool could be much better though. It’s is extremely not Web 2.0 and not fancy at all :( I liked the Gmail panel, but I didn’t need another email account - yet I had my favorite email address and wanted to use it further!

Then, my friend told me I could use Gmail as a POP3 client - send and receive emails from other (not necessarily Gmail accounts). Sounded like a good idea! I had a quick play with the settings, and it worked, very well!

Here’s the guide how to set this feature:

  • while on the main page of Gmail panel, go to “Settings” and choose “Accounts” tab there
  • in “Send mail as:” section, click “Add another email address” link
  • in the window that pops up fill in the form - provide the name and the email address you want to use to send messages
  • you will receive an email with a special code and instructions how to use it
  • now you can sent emails using the email address you provided
  • now, in the “Accounts” tab, click “Add another mail account” and do similar as previously
  • after that, you can use Gmail panel also for browsing mail from other accounts

If you’re interested in Gmail, I encourage reading official Gmail blog.

My presence on online social services

I use two online social services: LinkedIn (en) and GoldenLine (pl). My activities there mostly include adding people I know or work with to my connection lists. I think it’s a good idea to keep such list of friends; you never know, when you need to contact somebody you knew in the past. Also, one beautiful day, you may get a contact from a head-hunter ;)

Recently, I’ve updated my profiles on both those services. You can view them:

Hi there

It was almost two months ago when I wrote the last post… Nevertheless quite a number of things happened to me during that time:

All in all, from now on, the main theme of that blog will be different - there will be definitely less about the Semantic Web and eLearning since I do not have much time for it (remember - I got employed). I plan to write more about programming issues and life in general. We will see what happens next :)
